Sapphire Medical Clinics establish the UK’s first medical cannabis research ‘Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Group’

The multi-award-winning medical cannabis clinic, Sapphire Medical, is leading the way in expanding research and access and has established a medical cannabis research Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Group (‘PPIE group’). This group is involved in priority setting and research design as Real-World Evidence in medical cannabis continues to gather pace.

Dr Simon Erridge, Head of Research and Access at Sapphire Medical Clinics, commented “Active patient involvement via our PPIE group is vital as we ensure for upcoming project priorities that the research design is most appropriate. This group is integral to ensuring that the research we perform keeps patients in mind at every step of the process. This includes making sure that participation is acceptable, and the chosen outcomes are relevant to the lived experience of patients, not just doctors.”

Sapphire Medical Clinics is also collaborating with PLEA – Patient-Led Engagement for Access (https://www.pleacommunity.org.uk/) Maddy Smith, member of the Management Team at PLEA, commented “As a cannabis patient-led advocacy organisation we are very keen to contribute to and support research in this area.   As such, we look forward to working with Sapphire Medical’s new PPIE group and contributing to the future agenda and design of medical cannabis research.”
