Cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) are regulated medicines that contain cannabis, cannabis resin, cannabinol or a cannabinol derivative. Commonly referred to as medical cannabis, CBMPs don’t include hemp oil or any other products that are not intended for medical use.
CBMPs can be prescribed by specialist doctors and tailored to meet unique patient need. These products must comply with strict safety and quality standards set by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to ensure they are produced to high quality and safety requirements.

There are a number of CBMPs available in the UK, including oils (administered under the tongue), capsules, edible pastilles, and dry flower for vaporisation. The most appropriate option will depend on individual circumstances, and patients should discuss treatment options with a specialist.
The main active compounds found in CBMPs, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may affect how other medicines work. Patients should always speak to a specialist doctor to discuss any possible interactions. Patients should report any suspected side effects to their clinician, patient support or via the Curaleaf Clinic account.
In the UK, CBMPs can only be started by a specialist doctor who is listed on the General Medical Council’s specialist register. Most prescriptions are issued through private clinics such as Curaleaf Clinic, as NHS prescribing remains very limited.
GPs cannot start a patient on medical cannabis themselves, but they may refer patients or share relevant medical records with a specialist to support assessment.
GPs and clinical pharmacists may be able to continue prescribing medical cannabis for patients that are deemed suitable to do so.
At Curaleaf Clinic, you can find out if you’re eligible for a medical cannabis consultation by completing our online registration form. Each form is reviewed by our doctors to determine whether medical cannabis is suitable for you.
