Formulary

A formulary is a list of medical products that a healthcare provider routinely prescribes for the patients it looks after. It often includes key product information to support informed decision-making.

In medical cannabis care, clinics may use formularies to show the range of products that could be prescribed. Not every product will be suitable for every patient — your specialist will work with you to decide what’s appropriate for your condition and circumstances. Other medications outside of a formulary may also be available on prescription provided they meet all appropriate requirements and are suitable for a patient.

There are important differences between NHS and private clinic formularies for medical cannabis:

  • NHS formulary: Access is currently limited to a small number of licensed cannabis-based medicines, prescribed only in specific circumstances.
  • Private clinic formularies (e.g. Curaleaf Clinic): Can include a wider selection of medical cannabis products. These are not licensed in the same way as NHS products, but may still be prescribed where a specialist, in consultation with you, believes they could be appropriate.
